Homeward bound...

Well, what an eventful week... after a seemingly endless drive from the Fens near Ely all the way to Cape Wrath last weekend, we spent a lovely week in the far north west of Scotland and ended it with another marathon drive yesterday back to Scarborough... The only blip was the flat tyre we suffered on Thursday and the problem in finding somewhere to supply a new one... This added nearly 2 hours to the journey yesterday (having it fitted) and the restriction to 45mph before hand (emergency tyres and all that...)

In between we saw some wonderful natural phenomena, enjoyed some lovely food and spent time with some dear friends in a big house overlooking Loch Inchard... We also drank too much wine (well they did as I have developed an allergy to wine) and whiskey (guilty this time...). The weather was relatively kind although the heavy showers were really heavy... and on the way back saw snow on the mountains... Winter is a-coming..

Photographically a varied week... sometimes the weather was kind...

Other times, the weather was a tad wild and work on the images was needed...

The beach at Durness, taken in a howling gale and driving rain...

Lochinver in the rain...

However, whatever the weather, the autumnal colours were stunning... for me it was the highlight of the trip...

Golds, greens and browns mix along the riverside...

Oak leaves in autumnal splendour...

Whilst there we had Halloween to contend with and I saw this...

One trip was to the extraordinary Smoo Cave, near Durness on the north coast. This massive, natural cave was used by Vikings to repair their boats and shelter from the weather...

All that was there now was a few tourists and this guy... a local caver who appeared from a small hole in the floor, had a cup of tea and vanished again down the same hole...

A visit to the harbour in the local town (Kinlochbervie) yielded the information that fresh fish could be bought from the boats. If we wanted to turn up when they were unloading then tea could be obtained. So Lucy and I went down late afternoon... Lucy took off her hat, batted her eyelashes and was given 6 lemon sole by a one-armed fisherman who had just spent the past four days being storm-tossed in the north Atlantic...

Once prepared, the fish were delicious - Elaine, Tricia and Chris did an amazing job...

Gear-wise I limited myself to my Nikon D2Xs plus my elderly 3 Kings - Nikkor 20-35mm f2.8 AFD; Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 AFD and Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 AFD. Lugged in my trusty Lowe Pro Fast Pack 250... my favourite bag for daily use..

In here I can get the basic gear plus speedlight, laptop, iPad etc...

So, that was the week that was...

...gave us a great holiday and just to say goodbye, rewarded us with a sunrise...

worth waiting for...

But, my favourite image was this one, taken on an old quayside...

the Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 is an amazing lens... even for one that is over 15 years old as far as design is concerned... beautifully sharp...

So, what does the week ahead have in store? Well, promotions for Christmas, advertising... and of course shooting more images... Keep a look out for those HERE and I hope to see you all next week...

TTFN...
